It isn’t magic. It’s what happens when corporate team building days set the talks aside and offer something as simple and as human as making music together.

In this article I explain what rhythm activities for companies are, why they work, which ones you can include in a corporate event and how to organise it step by step so that it has a real impact on your team.

In short: rhythm activities for team building days are group exercises in which participants create music together using their bodies, Boomwhackers tubes or drums, with no musical knowledge required. They last from 60 minutes to half a day, adapt to groups of 5 to 100 people and work on communication, active listening, leadership and team cohesion.

What are rhythm activities for companies?

Rhythm activities for companies are hands-on exercises in which a work team uses percussion (body percussion or instruments) to reach a shared goal: keeping a steady beat, building a melody, following a conductor or improvising without losing time. Rhythm becomes a living metaphor for how a team works in the office.

The beauty of it is that nobody starts with an advantage. The finance director and the person who has just joined are at the same starting point, and the only way for the music to sound good is to listen to each other. That’s why this kind of activity fits so well into corporate team building days: it creates a shared experience in very little time and leaves lessons that can be carried straight back into everyday work.

I usually work with four tools:

Body percussion: hands, feet and torso as the instrument.

Boomwhackers: tuned plastic tubes, each note a different colour.

Drum circle: djembes, darbukas and other hand percussion.

Taketina: a mindfulness method based on rhythm, voice and movement.

Why does rhythm work on a team building day?

Shared rhythm has a solid scientific basis. One of the most widely cited studies is by Stanford researchers Scott Wiltermuth and Chip Heath, published in the journal Psychological Science. Across three experiments, they found that people who had taken part in a synchronised activity (walking in step, singing or moving in time) cooperated more in later group exercises, even when it meant a personal sacrifice. And an interesting detail: the effect appeared even when the activity didn’t generate particularly positive emotions, because what was strengthened was the bond between group members. You can read the study’s abstract on the website of the Association for Psychological Science: Synchrony and Cooperation.

In practice, this translates into very concrete benefits for the company:

Active listening: if you don’t listen to your colleague, the rhythm falls apart instantly.

Non-verbal communication: a look or a gesture signals an entry or a change.

Shared leadership: leading the group for a few seconds tests clarity and confidence.

Tolerance of mistakes: getting it wrong is part of the process, and the group learns to recover together.

Stress reduction: movement and sound release tension in a fun way.

Sense of belonging: finishing a piece together creates a powerful feeling of collective success.

5 rhythm activities for corporate team building days

These are some of the activities I run at corporate events. They can be done on their own or linked together in a single session, depending on the time available and the group’s goals.

1. The shared pulse (warm-up)

We stand in a circle and pass a clap from one person to the next, keeping a steady tempo. Little by little we add changes of direction, silences and accents. It’s an ideal warm-up to break the ice and, along the way, it already works on attention and quick reactions.

Develops: concentration, coordination and presence. Duration: 10-15 minutes.

2. Body percussion choreography

We learn the basic strokes (hands, chest, thighs and feet) and build a short choreography over a rock or reggae backing track. In my body percussion sessions the group ends up performing two complete routines, and the sense of achievement is immediate.

Develops: memory, coordination and self-esteem. Duration: 60-90 minutes. Group: up to 30 people.

3. Boomwhackers orchestra

Each person gets a tuned tube of a particular colour and, together, we form an orchestra. Because the notes are colour-coded, nobody needs to read music. First we play together, then some volunteers conduct the orchestra and, finally, small groups create their own melody against the clock. It’s one of the activities that generates the most laughter and the most learning. I explain it in more detail on the Boomwhackers activity page.

Develops: leadership, harmony, listening and creativity. Duration: 90-120 minutes. Group: 15 to 35-40 people.

4. Drum circle with rotating leadership

With djembes, darbukas and small percussion, the group creates a common rhythmic groove. Then different people step into the centre of the circle to lead changes in volume, tempo or style. This shows very clearly how instructions are given and received within a team, and how the clarity of the message affects the result.

Develops: decision-making, communication and trust. Duration: 2-3 hours (full format). Group: 5 to 25 people.

5. The team’s rhythm (collective improvisation)

To close, I invite the group to create its own rhythm representing the team or the company’s values. Each subgroup adds a layer and at the end we bring them all together. It’s the most emotional moment of the day and a very visual way of showing that the collective result is greater than the sum of its parts.

Develops: creativity, shared vision and cohesion. Duration: 20-30 minutes.

Which activity should you choose for your team building goal?

Not every company is looking for the same thing from a team building day. This table will help you find your way:

Main goal

Recommended activity

Approximate duration

Group size

Break the ice and integrate new joiners

Shared pulse + body percussion

60-90 min

5-30 people

Develop leadership

Boomwhackers orchestra with rotating conductors

90-120 min

15-40 people

Improve communication and decision-making

Drum circle with rotating leadership

2-3 hours

5-25 people

Reduce stress and improve wellbeing

Taketina (mindfulness with rhythm)

3 hours or more

10-60 people

Bring a large team together at a conference

Combined disciplines in an experience format

90 min to half a day

Up to 100 people

How to organise a rhythm-based team building day, step by step

If you work in HR or you’re organising an internal event, these are the steps I recommend:

Define the goal. Do you want to integrate new people, strengthen leadership, celebrate results or ease tension after an intense period? The goal shapes the activity.

Define the group. The number of participants and the mix of profiles (ages, departments, languages) determine the format. I run sessions in Catalan, Spanish and English.

Choose the right moment in the day. Rhythm works really well first thing, to energise the group, or straight after lunch, when energy dips and needs a lift.

Book a suitable space. All you need is a spacious room free of obstacles, with a chair (ideally without arms) for each participant. It can be held at your premises, in a hotel or outdoors.

Leave the equipment to the facilitator. In my case, I bring all the instruments: tubes, drums and everything else needed.

Save time for a final reflection. The last few minutes connect what happened in the music with what happens at work. That’s where the activity turns into learning.

Formats: from a 10-minute energiser to a full day

One of the advantages of rhythm activities is that they fit almost any agenda:

Energiser (10-60 minutes): perfect within a conference or training day, to change the pace between presentations.

Themed workshop (90-120 minutes): focused on a single discipline, such as body percussion or Boomwhackers.

Half-day experience: combines several disciplines and allows you to go deeper into the team’s goals. This is the format of Corella Music Experience, my musical team building programme for companies, which works for small groups and for teams of up to 100 people.

Multi-day programmes: designed for team retreats or leadership teams who want to work on leadership and shared vision in more depth.

Team building in Barcelona and across Catalonia

I run team building in Barcelona and anywhere in Catalonia, especially in the Garraf and Penedès areas and the Barcelona metropolitan area. Many companies prefer to hold the session in their own office, which cuts costs and travel. Others make the most of a day away, at a country house, a hotel or a natural setting, to step out of the routine.

Wherever it takes place, the essentials are the same: a space where the group can move and listen, and a willingness to try something different. My rhythm work is also endorsed by institutions such as the Diputació de Barcelona (Barcelona Provincial Council), which has included several of my workshops in its activity catalogues.

Common mistakes to avoid

Treating it as mere entertainment. Without a clear goal and a final reflection, the activity is just a nice memory.

Choosing a room that’s too small. Movement is part of the experience, and the space has a big impact on the result.

Forcing people to take part. Good facilitation brings everyone in gradually, without pressure.

Scheduling it at the end of an exhausting day. Rhythm gives energy, but it needs a minimum of attention to work.

Frequently asked questions about rhythm-based team building days

Do participants need any musical knowledge?

No. All the activities are designed so that anyone can take part, with no previous musical experience. With Boomwhackers, the notes are colour-coded and learning is completely intuitive.

How many people can take part in a session?

It depends on the activity. Body percussion and drum circle workshops work best with groups of 5 to 30 people, while combined experience formats can involve teams of up to 100 participants.

How long does a rhythm activity for companies last?

The most common formats range from 10-minute energisers to 90-120-minute workshops or half-day experiences. There are also multi-day programmes for team retreats.

Can it be held at the company’s premises?

Yes. All you need is a spacious room, free of obstacles, and a chair for each participant. It can also be held in hotels, event venues or outdoors if the setting allows.

Can it be tailored to the company’s specific goals?

Yes. Before each session we talk about the team’s goals (leadership, communication, onboarding new joiners, change management) and I adapt the activities accordingly.

Do rhythm activities fit into a CSR strategy?

Yes. This type of activity contributes to several of the 2030 Agenda’s Sustainable Development Goals, such as good health and wellbeing (SDG 3) and decent work (SDG 8), especially when it is part of a Corporate Social Responsibility policy.

Bring rhythm to your team’s next event

If you’re planning corporate team building days and looking for something different, participatory and with learning that lasts beyond the day itself, rhythm may be exactly what you need.
