Today the conversation starts differently: “Ignasi, half the team has never met in person.” Remote and hybrid working are here to stay, and they have brought a new need with them. In this article I explain why remote team building has stopped being a nice extra and become a key part of a team’s health, and how to approach it so that it really works.

Short answer: team building is essential in times of remote work because it restores what distance takes away: trust, spontaneous communication and a sense of belonging. When a team works remotely, these bonds no longer form by themselves in the corridor or at the coffee machine; they have to be created on purpose, through shared experiences.

What is remote team building?

Remote team building is the set of activities designed to strengthen cohesion, trust and communication in teams that work fully or partly at a distance. The aim is not just to have a good time: it is to deliberately create the personal bonds that arise naturally in an office.

It can take very different forms: short online exercises, regular in-person meetups, team days or multi-day programmes. In my experience, the ones that leave the deepest mark are those that take people away from the screen and get them doing something together, with their bodies and all five senses.

Why is team building essential in times of remote work?

Remote work has undeniable advantages: flexibility, work-life balance, less commuting and, often, better concentration. But it also has a silent cost that never shows up on a spreadsheet. These are the five reasons why I believe it needs to be offset.

1. Because distance isolates teams from one another

This is not just an impression. A study published in Nature Human Behaviour, using data from more than 61,000 Microsoft employees, analysed the effects of remote work on collaboration. The conclusion: when the whole company works remotely, collaboration networks become more static and siloed, with fewer bridges between different teams, and real-time communication decreases in favour of asynchronous communication. According to the authors, this can make it harder for new information to travel across the organisation.

Put more plainly: everyone ends up talking only to their own people. And a company whose departments do not know each other is a company that innovates less and coordinates worse.

2. Because trust is not built over video calls

An online meeting is efficient, but it is almost always transactional: you join, work through the agenda and hang up. There is no chat before it starts, no coffee afterwards, no knowing glance. And it is precisely in those informal moments that we learn to trust others. Without trust, it is hard to ask for help, admit a mistake or disagree openly.

3. Because the sense of belonging weakens

When the relationship with the company is reduced to a screen and a task list, it is easy to feel like a supplier of work rather than part of a project. Shared experiences are what create common memories, an “us”. And that “us” is what makes people stay, get involved and look out for their colleagues.

4. Because non-verbal communication disappears

In a chat or an email, tone, gesture and silence are lost. A short message can read as curt, and a small misunderstanding can grow for days. Meeting physically and doing activities that work on listening and coordination helps put a face, a voice and a personality to each name, and that means written communication is later read far more generously.

5. Because wellbeing is also a team matter

Working from home can blur the line between work and personal life, and some people experience it with a degree of loneliness. A well-designed team activity is also a healthy break: it gets the body moving, releases tension and reminds everyone that behind each avatar there is a person.

What signs show that your remote team needs team building?

It is not always obvious. These are the signs that people managers describe to me most often when they get in touch:

Cameras off and long silences in meetings: people attend, but they do not take part.

Frequent misunderstandings caused by written messages that are misread.

Departments that work like islands and do not know what the others do.

New people who never quite settle in because they have not met anyone in person.

Little initiative and few new ideas: the work gets done, but nothing more.

A general feeling of disconnection or fatigue, even when results are fine.

If you recognise two or three of these points, the problem is very likely not about processes or tools, but about connection.

What is lost with distance, and what does team building bring back?

What remote work weakens

What team building brings

Informal, spontaneous conversations

A shared space to talk without an agenda

Trust between colleagues

Shared challenges that make people rely on each other

Relationships between departments

Mixed groups that break up the usual islands

Non-verbal communication

Exercises in listening, eye contact and coordination

Sense of belonging

Memories and experiences that build team identity

Physical and emotional wellbeing

Movement, play and release of tension

Which team building activities for remote teams work best?

The best team building activities for remote teams are those that offer exactly the opposite of what the team lives every day: physical presence, movement, everyone taking part at once and zero screens. If the routine is sitting down, alone, in front of a computer, the activity should be standing up, together and using the body.

That is why I have been working with rhythm for years. Percussion has a quality few activities share: it synchronises a group in a few minutes, with no need to talk or have any musical knowledge. When thirty people who only knew each other from video calls manage to hold the same pulse, something happens that no online meeting can reproduce.

Body percussion: connecting with no equipment at all

Body percussion is the easiest option to bring to any team gathering. No instrument is needed: the body is the instrument. In sessions of 60 to 90 minutes we work on coordination, active listening and non-verbal communication, precisely the skills that suffer most with distance. It is ideal for opening an in-person day and breaking the ice between people who have not yet met.

A tailor-made musical experience for the whole team

When a company uses a gathering to bring everyone together, I usually suggest Corella Music Experience, my musical team building. It combines several disciplines (body percussion, a Boomwhackers tube orchestra, a drum circle and Taketina) and adapts to both small groups and large teams, indoors or outdoors. Each person has a part and they all sound at once: a good metaphor for what a distributed team should be.

Multi-day programmes for annual gatherings

Many remote teams see each other only once or twice a year. In those cases it is worth going deeper. Rhythms that transform is a two- or three-day programme that brings together music, body and coaching to work on cohesion, leadership and shared vision. It is a good option for an offsite or an annual convention where you want the gathering to have an effect that lasts for months.

How do you organise team building for a team that works remotely?

These are the steps I recommend so that the gathering is worth the effort of bringing everyone together:

Set a specific goal. Integrating new people? Bringing two departments closer? Celebrating a milestone? The activity should be chosen accordingly.

Pick a date that does not compete with work. Avoid quarter-end and give enough notice for those who live far away to make arrangements.

Find a well-connected venue. For teams spread across the region, holding the team building in Barcelona is usually practical because of the transport links, but any spacious, accessible venue in Catalonia can work.

Prioritise inclusive activities. Everyone should be able to take part, regardless of age, fitness or personality. Nobody should feel exposed.

Mix the groups. Use the chance to bring together people who never work with each other.

Leave free time. Lunch and unscheduled moments are as valuable as the activity itself.

Close with a reflection. Ten minutes to put into words what has been experienced and connect it with day-to-day work.

Keep it going. A small ritual in online meetings or a date set for the next gathering helps maintain the effect.

How often should a remote team do team building?

As a general guide, a remote team should have at least one or two meaningful in-person gatherings a year, and hybrid teams can use their office days for shorter, more frequent ones. Regularity matters more than quantity: a one-off gathering lifts spirits; a regular one builds culture.

There are also moments when it is especially advisable: when new people join, when leadership changes, when teams merge, at the start of an important project or after a period of heavy pressure.

Frequently asked questions about team building and remote work

Is in-person or online team building better for remote teams?

For remote teams, in-person team building usually has more impact, because it offers what is missing day to day: direct contact and shared experience. Online activities are useful for maintaining the bond between gatherings, but they rarely create it from scratch.

Do you need musical knowledge to do rhythm-based team building?

No. Rhythm and percussion activities are designed so that anyone can take part, with or without musical experience. Learning is intuitive and gradual.

How long does a team building activity for a remote team last?

It depends on the goal. There are formats of 60 to 90 minutes, half-morning sessions and two- or three-day programmes. For an annual gathering, it is worth setting aside at least half a day.

Does it work with teams that have never met in person?

Yes, and that is where the difference is most noticeable. Rhythm exercises do not depend on conversation, so people who do not know each other can collaborate from the first minute without the awkwardness of forced introductions.

Where can you hold team building for remote teams in Catalonia?

At the company’s premises, in a hired room or outdoors. I travel to Barcelona and all over Catalonia; all that is needed is a spacious area free of obstacles.

Conclusion: distance is offset by quality time together

Remote work is not the enemy of cohesion, but it does not create it either. A distributed team can be as close-knit as an office-based one, as long as someone takes care to create the spaces where people meet, listen to each other and do something together. Remote team building is precisely that: a conscious investment in the bond that holds everything else up.

If your team works remotely or in a hybrid format and you want your next gathering to leave a mark, get in touch and we will design a rhythm experience tailored to your group.

{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "FAQPage",
  "@id": "https://ignasicorella.com/en/remote-team-building/#faq",
  "inLanguage": "en",
  "mainEntity": [
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "Is in-person or online team building better for remote teams?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "For remote teams, in-person team building usually has more impact, because it offers what is missing day to day: direct contact and shared experience.
